Sentiments and symbolism converged in my mind as the room swelled with music that tickled my soul. Skirts flared and chests bared sang of inexplicable pride. The crowd echoed my elation because the students whose voices floated high above the chandeliers were lost in legacies of love. They were bailando – dancing, and it was clearly from the heart.

Watching the students of the University of Texas of the Permian Basin perform with the prowess of seasoned professionals touched the hearts of teachers in the most powerful way. We were not far removed from the tragedy that impacted so many there. Yet, they found a way to allow their love to lead them forward.

It is never easy to move past painful moments, especially when they hit so close to home. Nevertheless, embracing the bonds of humanity that draw us closer, esteem our beloved, and capture our candor lends a strength that can transcend our grief from broken hearts. These students danced con amor, with love.

We learned that for many, this dance changed their path. For others, it gave them esperanza para una manana mejor, hope for a better tomorrow. As an educator, writer and beginning Spanish Language Learner, I received the message that their hearts spoke to my own that could not have been clearer.

Though pain may be powerful and unbearable at times, love conquers all. What better way to find your purpose than discovering it in your passion. Continue to bailar con amor, estudiantes. Dance with love, students. The music of your soul composes the best symphony of all, y estamos escuchando, and we are listening.
