03-09, My Power Is in My Pen

An adage that struck me as I walked the halls of Houston Community College.

Words are the paint
that color my dreams.
I see through them
visions of desirable imperfections.

It’s funny how they cover
the canvas of my mind.
They dance whether my eyes are closed
in day or night.

Some once believed
they could take from me
the beauty that they bring
because they told me
I couldn’t speak,
but they didn’t know
my power comes from within.
It’s in my pen.

The knowledge planted in me
stirred in me a voice that sings
of epiphanies.
Like Maya, it won’t be silenced,
even when I cease to breathe.
Words survive the worst of things.

I speak for many of these
souls, laden with unease.
They know there are things
to be said and seen,
and I am filled with pleas.

I implore you to treasure these
things called words.
Use your heart and seize
the moments of essence
when we must contend
with ignorance, despair,
and senseless inequities.

If you have something to say,
write it. Immortalize
what you see through your eyes.
Many fearless leaders have done it.
Nations have crumbled
and been rebuilt upon them.
Words. Remember to masterfully wield
the power in your pens.
Our lives depend on it.

  1. What power you have in your words!

“Like Maya, it won’t be silenced,
even when I cease to breathe.
Words survive the worst of things.”

These are my favorite lines. I felt your passion here.

    1. Thank you so much! I always hope it will be received as intended. I am so happy to even be able to write. It breaks my heart when I meet students who have many important things to say, but they’ve not been taught how to voice their feelings through words.

It’s one of the many reasons I became a teacher. I believe that even if we don’t always agree with one another, we should at least have the tools to express how we feel.

Words are a gift. They help us share our hearts with the world. Thank you so much for reading 💯☺️❤️

  2. I was drawn in by your words, Houston Community College. We used to live in Houston (more than two decades ago). What a beautiful invitation, “If you have something to say, write it.”

    1. Oh wow! Small world! I just moved to Colorado a little over a year and a half ago, but I’ve been in Houston frequently over the last few months doing consulting work. I’m helping train teachers in literacy professional development.

Our trainings are held at an HCC campus, and this really caught my attention. I was happy to share!

Thank you so much for your feedback!

    1. Suzanne, you are making me smile from the inside out. I can’t express how much I love words (sigh). And the first line of your comment is so lyrical itself! “the beauty of words laid bare”… I think I’ll have to commit that one to memory. Thank you so much for sharing.

    1. Thank you so much, Fran! They came from the sincerest of places. I am often disheartened by things I hear and see that seem to go unaddressed are not addressed often enough. I feel that when we speak only, what we say can be forgotten; but, when we write it, it is indelible. My hope is that others will read it many times over and find the verity and strength in our words. Thank you so much for your feedback! ~Carla Michelle
